Matt Lee (mattlee) > Here's the hot tub on its concrete pad before construction began.
Matt Lee (mattlee) > The framing is done. Pressure treated 2x4s are used as sleeper joists. The whole thing is put together with stainless steel screws. The joists are spaced approximately 12" apart, so the deck boards won't be bouncy.
Matt Lee (mattlee) > The frame is attached to the concrete with 3" and 4" Red Head concrete anchors. A rotary hammer drill was used to drill most of the holes in the concrete. I started by using a regular corded drill with masonry bits, but all I ended up doing was breaking masonry bits. The hammer drill is definitely the right tool for this job.
Matt Lee (mattlee) > Note that the frame is also attached to the back and right side retaining walls with stainless steel screws.
Matt Lee (mattlee) > The back of the frame is very narrow - only about 18" wide. It's not attached to the concrete back here, since not much traffic will come around the back of the tub.
Matt Lee (mattlee) > Here's one of the benches. It's built out of the same pressure treated 2x4s as the deck frame. It sits on top of the concrete for stability, and is fastened from the sides to the deck joists.
Matt Lee (mattlee) > Here's one of the benches, half finished. The top surfaces were decked first, then the bench was installed in place, and then the sides were installed.
Matt Lee (mattlee) > The EON decking is starting to be put down. The left and front edges are done with bullnose decking, and regular 5.5" wide boards are used for the rest. Strange "T-clips" are used to fasten the boards to the joists - they are between the boards, so fasteners are not visible on the surface.
Matt Lee (mattlee) > Here's the completed left bench. My first attempt at the benches was... less than precise, so my brother Andy rebuilt them to better tolerances. They look really great now.
